Our sustainability strategy

At Skretting, we are committed to delivering sustainable feed and services for aquaculture. That begins with sustainable sourcing and is focused on achieving the best results towards animal health and farm productivity. This is part of our overall commitment to good citizenship towards all our stakeholders, and especially our employees, the communities where we operate, and the developing world.

We have identified two double materiality topics that form the basis of Nutreco’s integrated strategy and, together with our other material impacts, shape our Roadmap 2025. The Roadmap outlines our sustainability approach, objectives and, where possible, measurable targets.

    Climate change mitigation

    Our commitment:

We commit to the Science Based Target Initiative to align with the 2015 Paris Agreement and prepare for a lower-carbon future. In addition, we are committed to responsibly managing natural resources, biodiversity, and ecosystems in the production of our compound feed ingredients. This involves implementing practices that protect and enhance the health of our ecosystems, ensuring that our operations do not contribute to deforestation, habitat loss, or other forms of environmental degradation.

    Our approach:

    • Do what it takes to reach our Science-Based Targets commitment in 2030
    • Work with our supply chain to obtain accurate footprint data for the ingredients we use, and make sure that the footprint of these ingredients are reduced over time
    • Use renewable electricity where possible.
    • Implement LCA metrics in feed formulations, in the innovation stage-gate process, and in procurement (as part of Scope 3 for Science-Based Targets)
    • Develop foot printing capacity in our farm and formulation models to help customers measure and reduce their emissions
    • Achieve third party verification of core LCA tools in place
    • Connect LCA metrics to internal data systems for automated products and corporate footprint calculations

    Some of our results:

    • Reduced scope 1 and 2 emissions with 35% compared to 2018, and scope 3 with 10%
    • Have become 100% free from coal 6 years before our initial deadline
    • Managed to reduce customers’ feed conversion ratio by 10-30% through Skretting 360+, a package of innovative tools and services brought to farmers in several regions
  • Occupational health and safety

    Our commitment:

Our priority is to work towards a healthy and safe environment for our employees as well as third parties working in our facilities. We believe that ZERO severe injuries or fatalities is possible, and we develop procedures and instructions to be used in our activities to achieve that goal.

    Our approach:

    • Implement systems to guarantee all new workers receive HSE induction when they start working
    • Benchmark and monitor different KPIs according to OSHA (Occupational health and Safety Administration) standards
    • Continue with our audit processes and follow up on all non-conformities
    • Increase all our leaders’ awareness by implementing VFL (Visible felt leadership) programs in coming years
    • Investigate all HSE incidents in our facilities and any incidents that happen to our colleagues in third-party facilities

    Some of our results:

    • 97% completion rate on our ambitious plan to offer 8518 trainings sessions. This achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to continuous learning and development to enhance the skills and knowledge of our workforce
    • 71% HSE audit compliance gaps have also been addressed, leaving only 16 open findings

Frequent questions on sustainability

Why is aquaculture important?

According to WWF, 85% of the world’s marine stocks are either fully exploited or overfished. Our planet’s population is forecast to reach 10 billion people by 2050, and with this growth will come a much greater demand for food, including seafood.

Are circular economy principles applied to aquaculture feeds?

Yes. In aquaculture, the circular economy utilises by-products and waste generated by supply chains in the production of food for human consumption.

Is aquaculture sustainable?

Yes, when done properly.  As a global society, we are around 7.5 billion people heading towards 10 billion by 2050. Not only does this present the problem of an additional 2 billion mouths to feed, human diets are also increasingly shifting in line with growing prosperity.

Why aquaculture is sustainable

Are our feeds sustainable?

Skretting is committed to make feeds that meet global sustainability requirements in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals (SDGs). Sustainable feeds are essential to support the growth of aquaculture as one of the world's most efficient protein production methods.

Is aquaculture controlled?

In most regions, aquaculture is subject to strict controls throughout every stage of production right up to the point of human consumption. Skretting feeds undergo strict quality control processes. As we take food safety very seriously, Skretting has a global, comprehensive feed to food quality programme whereby we monitor for unwanted substances in both raw materials and feeds.
