Importance of seed selection in shrimp farming
Seed selection, also known as broodstock selection, is a critical aspect of shrimp farming that significantly impacts the success and productivity of the operation. 70% of the shrimp farming success depends on the quality of the seed what we stock. Here are some key reasons why seed selection is important in shrimp farming:
- It reduces the risk of crop failure
- High resistance to stressful conditions during and after shifting from hatchery to Nursery / grow-out ponds
- High survival and better growth
- Approach CAA approved and reputed shrimp hatcheries with maturation units for seed selection
- Preferably stock PL 13 (4+ rostral spines)
- Clean and complete body & appendages without any fouling or necrosis.
- Healthy hepatopancreas with fine lipid droplet and no infections
- Pass all the tests
- PCR result negative for WSSV with cold challenge
- PCR result negative for EHP
- Microbiology result (TCBS) Green colony – 0CFU & Yellow colony < 50 CFU
- Salinity stress test
- Formaldehyde stress test
- Healthy hepatopancreas with fine lipid droplet and no infections
- Microbiology (TCBS-Vibrio) Green- 0 CFU & Yellow < 50 CFU
