When fish eat a portion of the feed is digested, another is excreted as solid waste, while another is excreted as ammonia. The ammonia is toxic to fish. In water, bacteria further convert ammonia into Nitrite in the first phase of nitrification. Nitrite is further oxidized to nitrate in the second phase of nitrification.
